I've been asked in the past why I write poems. Much like my lyrics, there isn't one single answer. Sometimes I'm trying to cheer up a pen-pal. Other times it's to impress a lady at the coffee shop.
Then there are those moments where a rhythm of speech, or a nonsensical rhyme, gets stuck in my head. It's becomes a sliver working its way deeper and deeper in my psyche, much the way it does in the skin. Like, its physical counterpart it eventually dominates my thoughts and I need to do something, anything, to get it out. If I don't I won't sleep that night.
Usually these amount to nothing and will never be completed. But there are rare moments where I am able to conclude the poem, seldom to my own satisfaction. But those I know and have shared my poems with have always had very kind words to say. But despite that, I have not lost sight of the fact that I'm very much an amateur.
